Booked Solid: Five (More) Fantastic Places to Grab Your Next Read

November 11, 2008

If you read this post several weeks ago, you know that I already talked about some of my favorite local book nooks.  But, as everyone at Savvy Source is discussing books this month, and as there are plenty of great places to pick up a book in this town, I figured I'd include five more spots, all stores (and not libraries) this time, where you can choose the perfect read for you and your child.

Cozy and packed with loads of wonderful titles, The Children's Bookstore has been bringing kids and books together since 1978.  Though you can find other goodies here, like posters and stuffed animals, the draws are definitely the fabulous literature and the friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff.

The Ivy Bookshop - 6080 Falls Road, 21209, 410-377-2966
The Ivy, unlike some other bookstores, isn't exactly a place to hang around.  But the excellent selection of children's titles, as well as the attentive staff, makes it a prime destination for little readers and their parents.

What separates this BIG bookstore from some of the other BIG bookstores is its comfy, well appointed kids' section.  It's spacious enough to move around, without being so spacious as to swallow the children, and the selection, particularly for a shop of this caliber, is decent.  Plus, they have a train table (a major selling point for my train-obsessed son) and a ton of popular storytimes.  Oh, and they're just down the way from the Trader Joe's (a major selling point for this snack-obsessed mom).

Village Thrift Store - 790 W. North Ave., 21227
If you're looking for heaps of good, cheap books, this is the place to go.  Priced as low as 25-45 cents, Village's books are in great condition and represent a dizzying array of genres.  Stop by on Saturdays and Sundays for even more amazing deals.

Attractive and well organized, Ukazoo carries both new and used titles, as well as--HELLO--complimentary coffee and tea.
They also host a Wednesday story hour (and yup, it really lasts an hour), complete with--HELLO, AGAIN--complimentary snacks and juice.  And, as if I even have to tell you this, the name Ukazoo is super-fun to say.
