Guess what? It's almost weekend time again. And this weekend is not just any weekend, for it's the unofficial start of the summer season. So bust out the sunscreen, shimmy into your swimsuit and fire up the barbeque grill. It's time to get this three-day party started!

Got a kid who's into "I Spy"? Then come on out for this nature-inspired version of the classic game. Every participant will win a prize . . . as if an idyllic Saturday afternoon walk through the woods isn't prize enough.
Baltimore Herb Festival - Leakin Park, 1900 Eagle Drive, Baltimore, 410-323-0022

If you you're into herbs--and heck, who isn't?--then you're going to love the Baltimore Herb Festival, which is now in its 22nd year. Herbs, as you may have guessed, are the main attractions, but you can also expect to find tasty food, miniature train rides and animal friends from the neighboring Carrie Murray Nature Center.

Saturday, 1 p.m.; Ages: Elementary and up (though your preschoolers, of course, are welcome to watch)
I've always been a fan of egg drop soup, but even better? A good, old-fashioned, splatter-defying egg drop. Come and see who designs the most structurally sound egg-protection capsule. Or, if you have a school-aged child, encourage her to build something to cushion an egg.

Looking to get your summertime groove on? Then why not head down to the Harbor on Saturday for a free concert by The New Wave Jazz Ensemble? Sure, 8:00 is a little late for the little ones, but you know what? It's a holiday weekend!

Live music, stilt-walkers, face-painting and pho . . . Sowebo's got something for just about everyone. Take in a few of the cultural happenings, or simply sit on a curb and watch the people.

Mothers, not surprisingly, figure prominently among many of this weekend's highlights. You'll find lots of fun stuff to do--for mothers, for children, and for everybody else--all over the Baltimore area this weekend. Enjoy!

When's the last time you and your mate had a date? Too long ago, I feel safe in saying, so why not leave the kids at Eden Mill for a few hours, so you and your honey can enjoy some adult conversation? The kids will get a craft, a night hike and a family-oriented movie, while you get a dinner completely devoid of mac-n-cheese (unless, of course, you want mac-n-cheese, in which case, hey, I like the stuff, too, so don't get the impression that I'm judging you).
Mother/Daughter Look-Alike Contest - The Avenue at White Marsh, Main Plaza, 410-931-0411
Friday, 5:30-8 p.m. (Reservations required by 5/8/09 at 3 p.m.)
My daughter and I look a lot alike, so if we decide to enter, seriously, you'd better look out. Teams compete for (SQUEEE!) shopping sprees and are judged on overall likeness, facial similarity and dress. Bonus points, at least in my book, to any mom who shows up in a romper. 'Cause rompers are, like, totally underrated!

Ladew is a-bustin' with the blooms right now, so bring Mom on out for flowers aplenty, not to mention a free gift and complimentary coffee and tea.

Looking (ssshhhh) for a gift for Mom? Then look no farther than Sharp Farm, where you can whip up a lovely custom-made planter. Choose from a wide selection of flowers and herbs; soil, fertilizer and mulch will be provided. Also provided? Animals, for feeding and petting; a pond; a nature trail; and a hayride. Could gift-getting be any more fun?

I'm so tickled to include Cylburn among this weekend's highlights, as they've been closed for ages and ages (for renovations, which I can't wait to see) and have been sorely missed. Anyway, celebrate Cylburn and the glory of spring at Cylburn's 41st annual market day. You'll find affordable, locally grown perennials and annuals, as well as Master Gardeners to help you fine-tune your selections.

Friday, 12-7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10-6 p.m. the arrival of Spring. Experience the largest attended, longest running event of its kind,
It's May Day, and that means it's time for fairies and fantasy and springtime magic at the longest-running fairy festival in the nation.
St. Pius X Church and School Spring Carnival - St. Pius X, 6428 York Rd., Baltimore

Do your kids like rides? How about games and cotton candy? This carnival, a favorite from my own childhood, never fails to wow the kiddies with its million kinds of fun.
