Spring

Weekend Highlights, 4/10 - 4/12

April 09, 2009

There's plenty of fun stuff to do around town this weekend, including lot and lots of Easter events.  There are so many Easter events, in fact, that I've assigned them their own little heading.

Whatever you celebrate this weekend, whether it's Easter, Passover or simply spring, enjoy yourself!  And see you next week!

Animal Crackers by Wildlife Adventures - Port Discovery, 35 Market Place, Baltimore, 410-727-8120
Friday, 12-2 p.m.
Learn, through a variety of hands-on experiments, how different animals have adapted to survive.  Meet live animals and join in on this wild, interactive adventure.  Event is free with paid admission.

Paper Airplane Day College Park - College Park Aviation Museum, 1985 Corporal Frank Scott Drive, College Park, 301-864-6029
Friday, 12-4 p.m.,
Building paper airplanes might prove tricky for little hands, but there's no reason why Mom and Dad can't help!  Build your awesome, super-flying plane, and then compete in the annual Paper Airplane Derby at 3 p.m.  Prizes will be awarded, and the show should be fun.  Come build your own paper airplane and compete in our annual Paper Airplane Derby at 3pm. Prizes will be awarded!  Event is free with paid admission.

My Lady's Manor Steeplechase Races - Pocock Road and MD 146 (Jarrettsville Pike), Monkton, 410-557-9570
Saturday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Enjoy horses, hounds, food and live music at the 99th running of these races.  Proceeds benefit Ladew Topiary Gardens.

Critter Dinner Time! - Anita C. Leight Estuary Center, 700 Otter Point Rd., Abingdon, 410-612-1688
Saturday, 10:30-11 a.m.
Watch snakes, turtles and fish chow down at this free, educational event.

Little Stars: Games and Toys of Early America - The Star-Spar-Spangled Banner Flag House, 844 East Pratt Street, Baltimore, 410-837-1793
Saturday, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.; Reservations required.
Ever wonder about the games and toys of yesteryear?  Learn, through stories and crafts, about the children of early America, in this special program, designed just for preschoolers.

Second Sundays - Leakin Park, 4921 Windsor Mill Road, Baltimore, 410-396-0440
Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Second Sundays are back, from now through November, and my four-year-old son could not be more delighted.  Ride the miniature trains, as often as you like (or, more accurately, as often as your kids like), as they make their journey around Leakin Park.  Special thanks to the folks at Cheasapeake and Allegheny Steam Preservation Society for maintaining and engineering the trains.

And now, for a round-up of Easter events:

Easter Egg Hunt - Pump It Up, 11515 Cronridge Drive, Suites J and K, Owings Mills, 410-356-9050
Saturday, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Jumping, bouncing, Easter eggs and pizza.  Come hungry, and in a pair of clean socks.

Easter Bunny Train Ride at the B&O Railroad Museum - B&O Railroad Museum, 901 West Pratt Street, Baltimore, 410-752-2490
Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Hop (snicker) on board and take a ride with the B&O Easter Bunny.  I've never seen the B&O Easter Bunny, but I'm betting that he wears an engineer's cap and suspenders.

Easter Egg Hunt - Cromwell Valley Park, Sherwood Farm Entrance, Baltimore, 410-887-2503
Saturday, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.; Ages:  3-10
Hunt, play and explore this expansive and beautiful park.

Easter Egg Hunt - College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Doyle Lawn, Baltimore, 410-532-3184

Think how smart your kids will feel as they search for eggs at this collegiate hunt.

Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., with Hunt starting promptly at 1 p.m.
Join the amazing Humane Society staff, as well as the Easter bunny and some rescued rabbits, for face painting, moon-bouncing and--of course--egg-hunting.
