Garden Adventures at Surreybrooke

June 22, 2009

What separates Surreybrooke from other garden centers, and what makes it totally worth the drive up to Frederick County, is its abundance of family-friendly amenities.  Check out the adorable children's garden, complete with animal benches, an evergreen maze and an impossible-to-resist wooden look-out tower; visit any of the three ponds, one of which is home to the most massive frogs I've ever seen; say "awwww" to the precious miniature ponies; picnic at a table or out on the grass, in full view of the nearby mountains; pretend to be a troll or a bear or a princess in a quaint, imagination-inspiring cottage.  Plus, pick up some beautiful, healthy plants for your garden, typically for less than you'd pay at one of those big-box hardware store/garden centers.  And you know what else is awesome aboutSurreybrooke?  Once you're finished with all of your plant-shopping and exploring, you can head on over to neighboring Gambrill State Park, where you'll find rocks for climbing, trails for hiking, and plenty of gorgeous mountain scenery.  Just be sure, if you decide to visit on a baking summer's day, to protect your delicate plant purchases from the heat (or maybe consider hitting Gambrill prior to Surreybrooke).

Weekend Highlights, 5/8/09 - 5/10/09

May 07, 2009

Mothers, not surprisingly, figure prominently among many of this weekend's highlights.  You'll find lots of fun stuff to do--for mothers, for children, and for everybody else--all over the Baltimore area this weekend.  Enjoy!

Nature Nights - Eden Mill Nature Center, 1617 Eden Mill Road, Pylesville, 410-836-3050
Friday, 6-11 p.m.; Ages 4-up (Reservations required by 5/8/09)
When's the last time you and your mate had a date?  Too long ago, I feel safe in saying, so why not leave the kids at Eden Mill for a few hours, so you and your honey can enjoy some adult conversation?  The kids will get a craft, a night hike and a family-oriented movie, while you get a dinner completely devoid of mac-n-cheese (unless, of course, you want mac-n-cheese, in which case, hey, I like the stuff, too, so don't get the impression that I'm judging you).

Mother/Daughter Look-Alike Contest - The Avenue at White Marsh, Main Plaza, 410-931-0411
Friday, 5:30-8 p.m. (Reservations required by 5/8/09 at 3 p.m.)
My daughter and I look a lot alike, so if we decide to enter, seriously, you'd better look out.  Teams compete for (SQUEEE!) shopping sprees and are judged on overall likeness, facial similarity and dress.  Bonus points, at least in my book, to any mom who shows up in a romper.  'Cause rompers are, like, totally underrated!

Mother's Day Weekend at Ladew - Ladew Topiary Gardens, 3535 Jarrettsville Pike, Monkton, 410-557-9570
Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Ladew is a-bustin' with the blooms right now, so bring Mom on out for flowers aplenty, not to mention a free gift and complimentary coffee and tea.

Mother's Day Celebration - Sharp Farm, 4003 Jennings Chapel Road, Brookeville, 410-489-2572
Saturday, 12-5 p.m.; Ages 2-12
Looking (ssshhhh) for a gift for Mom?  Then look no farther than Sharp Farm, where you can whip up a lovely custom-made planter.  Choose from a wide selection of flowers and herbs; soil, fertilizer and mulch will be provided.  Also provided?  Animals, for feeding and petting; a pond; a nature trail; and a hayride.  Could gift-getting be any more fun?

Space Day - Maryland Science Center, 601 Light Street, Baltimore, 410-685-5225
Saturday, 12-4 p.m.
Give Mom the stars at this out-of-this-world celebration of outer space.

Cylburn Market Day - Cylburn Arboretum, 4915 Greenspring Avenue, Baltimore, 410-367-2217
Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
I'm so tickled to include Cylburn among this weekend's highlights, as they've been closed for ages and ages (for renovations, which I can't wait to see) and have been sorely missed.  Anyway, celebrate Cylburn and the glory of spring at Cylburn's 41st annual market day.  You'll find affordable, locally grown perennials and annuals, as well as Master Gardeners to help you fine-tune your selections.

Child-Fest 2009 - Reservoir High School, 11550 Scaggsville Road, Fulton, 410-486-4475
Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Enjoy a day of kid-oriented fun--including Kevin Clash (the real Elmo) and Carmen Osbahr (the real Rosita)--at this festival to benefit the Children's Cancer Foundation.

Second Sundays in Leakin Park - Leakin Park, 4921 Windsor Mill Road, Baltimore, 410-396-0440
Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m
Nothing says "Happy Mother's Day" as perfectly as a ride on a miniature train.  Just ask my train-obsessed son, who would be horrified if I failed to include this.

Have a great weekend, and Happy Mother's Day!

Earthly Delights: Five Gardens to Visit with the Family

March 10, 2009

My family and I, we love to ramble through beautiful gardens.  And not only because my husband is a gardener, and because he's a fiend for hardscapes and hardy perennials, but also because gardens are inspiring and soul-lifting places that stir our imaginations and strengthen our bonds with nature.  Having visited about a million gardens, including their own, my kids know not to trample delicate seedlings or to (intentionally) scare the heck out of wildlife.  Still, as they're kids, they like to run and screech and wander, all of which they can do, within reason, at any of the gardens I'll describe below.  Think gardens are prim and proper places, only to be visited with your granny, and in a sunhat?  Think again, as spring is coming, and I can think of few better ways to usher in, with your children, the season of rebirth.  Read more...

The Weather Outside Is Frightful, and My Toddler's Being Spiteful (Volume Two): Five (More) Things to Do in Baltimore on a Less-Than-Perfect Day

January 20, 2009

Winter. At its best, it's a season of light snow, of candy hearts, and at its worst, well, it's a season of boredom. There hasn't been much in the way of snow this winter, and it's too early, of course, for candy hearts, so what's left for you to do with the kids? Sure, there's ice skating--I wrote about skating venues a few weeks back--but perhaps you're still looking for a few activities that  Read more...

Your Baltimore Reflection

January 13, 2009

We've been talking a lot about self-reflection at Being Savvy these past few weeks, what with it being the new year and all, and the flavor of the month, it seems, is introspection.  And as much as I appreciate the importance of looking inward, I also dig the value of looking outward , sometimes literally.  For this new year--this time of change and resolution and electricity--is as much an  Read more...

Growing a Gardener: The Cromwell Valley Children's Gardening Club

October 11, 2008

First off, I should come clean about something: I am not a gardener. I'd like to be--after all, there are few delights tastier than herbs and veggies plucked straight from the soil, and what could be more lovely than the dahlias my husband tends every summer? The problem, I'm loath to admit, is that I'm prissy. I don't like to get dirty. I don't like to lift things. And while I do very  Read more...

Room to Run: Where to Take the Kids to Run 'em Ragged

October 07, 2008

Fall, as we all know, is upon us, people, and it's only a matter of time before the icy hand of winter shoos us all inside. So why not, before the weather turns cold and wretched (are you getting a sense of my feelings about winter?), take advantage of these last temperate days? And how best to do that, you're probably asking? Why, by depriving your child of TV and going a little primitive,  Read more...
